Green IT: should you buy refurbished tech?

10th April 2025

In the UK around 25% of people throw away old computers* at the tip rather than recycling them – what a waste of potentially useful tech!

Should you consider buying refurbished technology for your business? There are a range of pros and cons to purchasing refurbished phones, laptops and PCs. Have a look and see if buying second hand is the right option for you:

Pros

Cost savings – generally refurbished computers are much cheaper than new ones.

Quality control –rigorous testing needs to be done to older devices to ensure they still meet standards.

Availability – the newer the tech, the more in-demand it is likely to be. With refurbished items you likely won’t have to wait as long to get your item.

Cons

Older technology – it might not have the latest features or hardware, leaving you a step behind your competitors.

Limited warranty – because they might not be as dependable, older devices have a shorter warranty period than new ones.

Compatibility issues – newer software or apps may not be compatible with older devices, leaving you with a machine that is unable to function properly.

Environmental impact

Reduced e-waste – less electronic waste in landfills.

Lower carbon footprint – avoid the energy intensive manufacturing process needed for new products.

Conserves raw materials – reduces the demand for raw materials

When it comes to buying refurbished items, it really depends on who you are and what you need. For example, if you’re an independent business selling cakes and you only use your laptop for emails and orders, you probably don’t need a top-of-the-line PC – a refurbished one will serve you well.

If, however, you’re an IT support company (just like Interfuture Systems!) you’re probably going to need the latest in technological capabilities to keep up.

And clearly if you can get by using refurbished tech, the planet will thank you for it!
