Green IT: how can your business’ IT be more environmentally friendly?

2nd April 2025

With only 16% of the world's largest companies* on track to hit net zero goals by 2050, what can we all be doing to reduce our environmental impact?

Here are a few things you can do to improve your business’ environmental efficiency:

Use energy-efficient hardware: not all hardware is created equal – some devices consume less power than others. Look for certifications like Energy Star before you purchase a new device to save yourself energy in the long term.

Power management: this is an easy one, that any employee can do! Implement power saving settings on your devices to reduce energy usage when they are not being actively used. Instead of your PC staying on over lunch, it might go into standby, saving energy.

Renewable energy: use renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind, to power your IT infrastructure. It can be more of an investment at first, but over time it will save you money, as well as reducing your carbon footprint.

Sustainable software development: use software that is optimised for energy efficiency. This will minimise the need for resource-intensive processes.

Education and policy: promote awareness about environmental best practice so everyone can do their bit to reduce emissions. Even if it is something as simple as turning a light off when not in use, everything adds up!

Making IT services green is difficult, but there are steps you can take to reduce energy usage and have less of a negative environmental impact. This benefits not only the planet (which is reason enough to make the effort), but also your business. By implementing greener IT measures you’ll reduce costs, as well as showing your customers and clients that you care.
