Top 5: IT FAQs

31st March 2025

Your IT is incredibly complicated. With technology constantly evolving and developing, even the most tech-savvy people can fall behind in certain areas.

For this article though, we wanted to take things back to basics and answer the 5 most asked questions about IT. These questions might appear obvious to those in the know, but understanding them is essential to understanding the larger world of IT.

5. How do I troubleshoot network connectivity issues?

This is a common problem – we wrote a whole blog covering connecting to the internet that you can find HERE. To summarise, check if your network cables are properly connected, restart your router and modem, ensure your device is on and connect to the right network, run network diagnostics provided by your operating system and contact your internet provider should the issue continue.

4. What is the difference between hardware and software?

If you’re more of an IT novice, this can be tricky, as the terms of thrown around so often in media (often incorrectly). Hardware is the physical components of a computer system – so your monitor, CPU or keyboard. Software refers to the programs and applications that run on that hardware, including operating systems, word processors and web browsers.

Think of it like this: if I can physically touch it, you have hardware; if you can’t, that is software.

3. What is cyber security and why is it important?

This a question better aimed at Interfuture Security, our sister company that focuses solely on cyber security, but we’ll give it a go! Cyber security refers to protecting systems, networks and programs from digital attacks. These attacks are designed to access personal information, get financial details, extort business and prevent them from being able to function.

For all the details on what the threats are and what you need to defend against them, give the Interfuture Security blog page a look: there are articles explaining each element in detail.

2. How can I protect my computer from viruses and malware?

Another one for Interfuture Security perhaps, malware refers to a range of digital attacks, including viruses, that are designed to gain access to your systems to get data from them. To protect against them we recommend installing and regularly updating antivirus software (or even better now EDR and XDR), enabling firewalls, keeping your operating systems and software up to date, avoid clicking on suspicious links or files and using strong passwords.

1. What is cloud computing?

Perhaps the most complex question on this list, cloud computing is the delivery of computing services – including servers, storage, databases, networking, software and analytics – over the internet (“the cloud”). It allows data and applications to be stored on remote servers, reducing the need for hardware, enabling more flexibility and scalability.

We hope you found this useful – if you still need more details, check out our blog page HERE. We go over a lot of these topics in detail, so hopefully they can fill in any gaps!

If you have any further questions, contact the team HERE – they might make it into a future blog!
