What is VoIP?

17th February 2025

A third of UK small businesses have switched to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)* – is it the right call for you?

Do you remember landline phones? I do, though even when I was growing up they were being used less and less. I think by the time I left home the only people who called us on it were elderly relatives or scammers – when I moved into my own place, I didn’t even install one.

Because why would you?

There is no reason to have a phone line in 2025 – so why would you have one for your business?

Instead, businesses are moving to using VoIP, the technology behind calling people using the internet. It includes the features you would expect from your phone line: voicemail, conference call facilities, call waiting/hunting, call parking, directed call pickup ACD queues and rich call detail reporting.

Unlike phone lines though, VoIP has more functionality. It can be integrated with your IT systems, including email-based voicemail, Outlook contacts and your CRM system.

Additionally, it allows for use over a wide area: with the rise of working from home, sometimes businesses have staff scattered all over the world. With VoIP, everyone can stay connected.

Furthermore, it can save you money – here at Interfuture we save our customers an average of 50% when compared to their previous call and line rental costs.

One potential downside is that you are completely reliant on your internet connection: if it isn’t strong enough you may have audio issues and if it drops out completely, you lose your phone line. Also, because it uses the internet VoIP can be targeted by cyber criminals.

If you have a strong internet connection and reliable cyber security those problems shouldn’t be a concern – the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. To learn more about our VoIP services click HERE and for any further queries on the subject contact us HERE.
