Why should you back up your data?

11th February 2025

91% of organisations use some form of backup* – protect your data or you may lose it.

In life we use backups: spare keys and spare tyres are physical examples and using a calendar to keep track of appointments serves as a backup for your memory.

Your IT system holds valuable data, important for your business or significant to you personally. To keep this data secure, it is a good idea to have a backup, allowing piece of mind should something happen to it.

You can create a backup easily via cloud storage, or on removable devices such as an external hard drive, USB stick or SD card.

The National Cyber Security Centre*2 gives a few reasons why backing up your data is a good idea:

If you have a new device – you might want access to your data from your old device so you can transfer it over.

If your device is lost – easily done, particularly as devices become smaller and more mobile.

If your device is stolen – your IT support may remotely lock and wipe your device if it is stolen, a backup ensures you don’t lose it permanently.

If your device breaks – either due to accident (I can’t be the only one to spill my coffee on my laptop) or just degrading over time.

If the data on your device is deleted or becomes unreadable – this may be due to malware, user error or damage (by users or natural disasters).

If malware infects your device – hackers can’t hold your data hostage if you have it safe on a separate device.

In short, backups can be lifesavers. If you’re lucky you might never need it, but it is better to be safe than sorry. If you want to know more about how to backup your data, contact us HERE.
