Why is it important to keep your systems updated?

5th February 2025

Without the latest patch your IT system could be inefficient, or even at risk.

Updates always come at the most inconvenient times. Imagine you’re just starting your busy day of work and suddenly an update pops up and your computer is unusable for what feels like an age. Our phone operating systems frequently need updating, but if you’re anything like me, you put it off as it is never a convenient time.

Though it may be a nuisance, these updates are vital, and we suggest that you do them as soon as they’re available. Why? Check out these reasons:

Security: cyber threats are evolving all the time, so new ways of combating them need to be patched into existing software. By doing these updates you ensure that your security is as strong as possible, keeping your systems safe. For more information on cyber resilience, check out Interfuture Security.

Efficiency: things can always be improved, including software. Updates can be made to help systems run better, patching over problems. For the best experience possible using an application, you want to have the most up to date version.

New features: developers are constantly adding new features to their systems to improve user experience. Think of how videogames update by adding new content, allowing players to continue to enjoy the game even after it has been released – for systems, this new content may be a new functionality that can now be added, such as Microsoft recently patching Copilot into their other apps.

There are numerous benefits to keeping your system updated. Some applications update automatically, while others need you to manually put them through – we recommend that you regularly check that updates are occurring to assure the best performance and security. The National Cyber Security Centre* has more details on the importance of keeping systems updated.
